Social Media Breakfast Calgary #8

Connecting the Calgary online and social media community through networking, coffee and breakfast.

Calgary, AB (July 12, 2010) – Calgary’s Social Media Breakfast announces Bob McInnis, executive director of Brown Bagging It for Calgary's Kids, and Doug Lacombe, MBA, president of the social media agency communicatto, as this month’s event guest speakers. Both McInnis and Lacombe are prominent players in Calgary’s online community and will present on building relationships through social media.

Come early and plan to stay after to meet others and share new ideas of understanding and using social media. Marketers, PR pros, entrepreneurs, bloggers, podcasters, new-media fanatics and online social networkers are all welcome to attend.

Information about the topics being presented:

Bob McInnis:

"The Search to Belong: Rethinking social media relationships"

Social media capital can be build quickly and destroyed overnight. We need to understand the four spaces where social media relationships exists (face to face relationships as well) and the differing expectation and commitment that is needed for each space.

Doug Lacombe:

"Personal branding on the social web; building social capital while avoiding narcissism"

If social media is like a cocktail party, personal branding on the social web is a bit like a talent show - part skill testing questions, part bikini competition. What we all want is the Sally Fields moment - "you like me, right now, you like me", but what we often get is the sound of silence or, worse yet, the echo chamber effect of the mutual admiration society ("No, you're awesome!"). Lacombe will explore the ins and outs of personal branding, the patient investment it takes to build social capital, and the pitfalls to avoid in promoting the brand of YOU.

There is no cost to attend this event.

About SMBYYC

The SMBYYC houses an open environment to share today’s best and worst examples of social media, as practiced by individuals, industries and organizations in Calgary and around the world. Guest speakers share their experience and expertise of social media use, followed by an opportunity to network with a community of like-minded individuals.

The SMB was founded by Bryan Person in August 2007 as an event for social media newbies and experts to come together to eat, meet, share and learn. The breakfast series began in Boston and has now spread to more than a dozen cities around the world. The Calgary chapter of the SMB was started by Scott Baird of McQ Design Strategies as a place for social media enthusiasts to discuss effective practices and new techniques.
